Asian Studies Program

Founded in 1984, this interdepartmental program focuses on the histories, cultures, and politics of the dynamic nation-states of East, Southeast, and South Asia, while also exploring their transnational interactions and their global diasporas, especially to the United States. In so doing, it encourages students to look carefully and critically at the complex ways that people in Asian countries interact with one another and with the rest of the world in both the past and the present. Hong Liu Asian Studies Fund

This fund was established by Hong Liu, MA’87, MA’89, to foster cultural exchange though international research, a new lecture series, innovative course development, and travel for co-ops and study in Asia. Ms. Liu, who worked in international relations in China before coming to Northeastern for graduate studies in sociology and economics, sees strength in both countries’ ideologies and institutions. Ms. Liu says the fund will enable more faculty and students to “engage in dialogues that remind us how complementary our strengths and challenges really are.”

The following awards are sponsored by the Hong Liu Asian Studies Fund:

  • Asian Studies Student Award
Supports study abroad, international research, internship, and co-op abroad opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students at Northeastern University who intend to pursue careers focusing on building relations between the United States and Asia on the basis of peace, justice, and mutual understanding.

  • Asian Studies Curriculum Award
Supports faculty who are developing new and innovative coursework on the comparative study of Asian societies.

  • Asian Studies Research Award
Supports research and related activities undertaken by Northeastern University faculty and/or PhD students.

Student Research

The Asian Studies Program and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities encourage all students to participate in undergraduate research. We view undergraduate research as a particularly valuable form of experiential learning in which students actively participate in the making of knowledge, often alongside cutting-edge faculty experts.

Through these experiences, students learn valuable academic, professional, and interpersonal skills that are core to the college’s educational mission and highly valued in graduate programs and the varied careers our graduates pursue.
